  • Designer Michelle Kinerson of Cape Porpoise Trading Co. has always had a deeply rooted love and respect for nature but it was landing in Cape Porpoise just a few years ago that had been the key to unlocking her creative mind. Childlike wonder and amazement consumed her thoughts as she explored the islands protecting the harbor; collecting shells, skipping rocks, exploring tide pools... Michelle now resides in Cape Porpoise and started Cape Porpoise Trading Co. with the intent to create eco-friendly goods that aesthetically evoke positive emotion; similar to the effect Cape Porpoise and the rocky coast of Maine continue to have on her.

Cape Porpoise lobstermen were the first to give her their old lobster rope to make doormats. Now, Michelle connects with lobstermen along the entire coast of Maine and pays them directly for their retired rope to continue creating lovely, handmade, lobster rope goods.

WHY CAN'T LOBSTERMEN USE THIS PERFECTLY GOOD ROPE? Lobster rope aka float rope or pot-warp, was once the primary type of rope lobstermen used at sea to connect their buoys to their lobster traps. A few years back the government banned float rope because of whale entanglement issues, forcing lobstermen to make a switch to a different kind of rope (sink rope). This resulted in an abundance of used float rope that was headed for a landfill. Cape Porpoise Trading Co. has partnered with The Maine Lobstermen Association, giving them the ability to connect with lobstermen all along the coast of Maine.

*Due to the nature of these mats being handmade from recycled rope, each product's size and color may vary slightly.
